Forest Pennant Paving
Forest Pennant sandstone is the material of choice for future regeneration and redevelopment across the city of Bath, one of the few working cities to be honoured with World Heritage Site status. This follows the appointment of Forest of Dean Stone Firms as the natural stone supplier for the paved area at Bath’s biggest shopping centre, SouthGate Bath, by the SouthGate Limited Partnership (Multi Development and Aviva Insurance).
Products: Forest Pennant Paving
Client: SouthGate Limited Partnership and Bath & North East Somerset Council
Positioned as the exemplar project for all future regeneration and redevelopment schemes in Bath, SouthGate Bath gave specifiers the opportunity to source materials that would ultimately set the standard for achieving a sustainable, cohesive and complementary style and finish.
The tonal variation of Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone provides both an aesthetic and practical solution for paved areas in and around the city, complementing the dominant building stone, Bath limestone.
Sympathetically designed, in keeping with the Georgian architecture of the city, the new retail development combines public seating areas and Piazza-style squares, with wide, atmospheric side streets defining the centre as a place to socialise as well as shop.

Since installing 8,000m2 of 50mm diamond sawn, mixed colour Forest Pennant paving and setts at the retail site, Forest of Dean Stone Firms has provided Bath & North East Somerset Council (BATHNES) with a pattern book for future streetscape developments across Bath. This not only outlines the exact material specification and method of installation used at the SouthGate Bath site but also details protection systems and ongoing maintenance.
Since completion of SouthGate Bath, the focus is now on Phase 2 and 3 of the Bath regeneration programme, including the redevelopment of the railway station.
