Forest Pennant commercial paving products
McArthur’s Yard, previously known as McArthur’s Warehouse, served as the headquarters of the McArthur’s Group, a metal merchant company based in Bristol, established in the 1860s. Initially constructed as a malt house, the building had deteriorated over time. Guinness Homes has now redeveloped it into modern residences, maintaining sensitivity to the historic harbour's character.
The architects, Nash Partnerships, prioritised local materials and sustainability in this development. Bricks from the existing site have been reused, with two-thirds of the wall being retained and structurally reinforced for longevity. Additionally, Bath Stone slabs from the original site are being recycled, as well as the grey stone setts.
A distinctive material feature of McArthur’s Yard is the blue Forest Pennant sandstone bush hammered paving, setts, and kerb laid at the front of the site and around the famous graving dock. This creates a remarkable contrast between the old, cobbled streets and contemporary modern architecture, effectively capturing the essence of Bristol’s industrial heritage and its promising future.
