New Build: The Hive, Worcester
A suite of Forest Pennant products, cladding and architectural masonry from Forest of Dean Stone Firms were used to create The Hive, an integrated library, history centre and archive, in Worcester.
As a combined facility The Hive is believed to be the first of its kind in Europe. It was designed by award-winning architectural practice Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, working with landscape architects Grant Associates and main contractor, Galliford Try. The Hive development is a partnership between Worcestershire County Council, the University of Worcester and Worcester City Council.
A Complementary Approach
Forest of Dean Stone Firms supplied the now iconic structure with vertical strip cladding, external masonry and coping for an innovative ‘island’, a solid structure topped by three Scots pines. The island offers a shaded meeting point for classes and groups, and is all set to come into its own during a flood, as The Hive sits proudly alongside the River Severn.
Pennant sandstone cladding and a complete package of Forest Pennant hard landscaping products work to complement the stark lines of the building and the striking gold of the roofline, comprising seven copper alloy clad funnels.
A Future-Proof, Local Material
Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone was selected due to its versatility and future-proof qualities; processed using ‘green electricity’ produced by the company’s micro hydro generation turbine, being a native, British natural stone and sourced within 50 miles of the new development. Sustainability is one of ten key values attributed to The Hive.
The natural stone company secured the contract on the basis of its skill and expert knowledge, offering a competitive and multifaceted building product solution for both vertical and horizontal surfaces thus meeting the complex demands of the project brief.
Simon Courtney, project manager for lead contractor Galliford Try, said:
“An iconic development like the Hive in Worcester requires top quality materials and we have been delighted to source such a product locally through Forest Pennant [Forest of Dean Stone Firms].”
