Memorial: Ryder Cup 2010 Anniversary
To commemorate the city’s role as host of the Ryder Cup 2010, Newport City Council commissioned Forest of Dean Stone Firms to create a feature at the entrance of Newport Civic Centre using it’s Forest Pennant paving.
The natural stone company had to meet a very tight deadline to ensure that the 4m x 3m paved area was delivered, laid and sealed in readiness for a one-year anniversary ceremony.
Producing and delivering the finished piece in just 10 days, Forest of Dean Stone Firms used an epoxy crystal clear resin with gold flakes to recreate the Ryder Cup emblem, filling a 10mm rebate with the hard-setting substance. Letters were formed from black granite and were recessed into the Pennant sandstone along with a black enamel finish, stainless steel disc depicting the official 2010 Ryder Cup logo.
Director of Ryder Cup, Richard Hills, unveiled the commemorative paved area at the anniversary ceremony, along with Newport’s Mayor, Councillor Margaret Cornelious and leader of Newport City, Councillor Matthew Evans.
Project manager for Newport City Council, Andrew Brooks commented:
“I cannot praise Forest Pennant [Forest of Dean Stone Firms] enough for the professional service that we have received, especially given the very tight timescale. We are very pleased with the result.”
The Ryder Cup is the most celebrated in the golfing calendar and research shows that it was a major boost to the Welsh economy, with nearly 250,000 visitors to the area throughout the event. Newport benefited from nearly £30m of spending during Ryder Cup week.
Forest Pennant is a Forest of Dean Stone Firms Ltd brand. Forest Pennant products are supplied by Forest of Dean Stone Firms Ltd.
