Regeneration: Canal Walk & Regents Street, Swindon

As part of a five-year town centre regeneration programme, Forest of Dean Stone Firms supplied over 15,000m2 of its Forest Pennant paving to Forward Swindon, Swindon Borough Council’s regeneration delivery body. Following this installation, Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone is now the primary landscape material of choice for the entire retail centre of Swindon.

Landscape Material of Choice

Speaking on behalf of Forward Swindon, projects manager Nick Conder commented:

“Swindon has so much to offer and our aim is enhance and nurture this potential for not only newcomers to the area but the existing businesses and residents. Therefore we felt that it was of great importance to the development as a whole, that we create lasting partnerships and relationships with suppliers who share our enthusiasm and passion for the town.”

With certain areas in need of particular attention the council also had to consider the quality and quantity of the products available and how they could be tailored to suit Swindon. In maximising the use of indigenous Pennant sandstone, the scheme not only benefits from using a local, sustainable material but due to its natural properties the stone provides a hard-wearing, quality finish unrivalled by man-made composite paving.  To combat gum adhesion the Forest Pennant paving was pre-treated with a protective coating by a recommended third party contractor.

Coating Prevents Gum Adhesion

Nick continued:

“We needed a paving material that would provide a cohesive, practical yet aesthetic solution. The protective layer also means that the chewing gum problem on pavements outside of food-retail premises has now been eradicated as the coating prevents the adhesion of the gum. We can be reassured that the finish, colours and quality of the freshly laid stone will be here for the long-term.”

Bespoke Paving – Relief Pattern

Nick Horton, Forest of Dean Stone Firms, managing director said:

“In sourcing indigenous natural stone Swindon now has a local, sustainable material that naturally enhances and complements the surroundings.  Its appointment as material of choice has also allowed us to prove the capabilities of our Pennant sandstone as well as our skills.  A section of the paving in Canal Walk has been shot-blasted to create a water droplet pattern, in a nod to the location; it was then worked and finished by hand to produce a raised relief-pattern.”

Swindon – Top 50 Retail Centre

One of the main objectives of the programme is to put Swindon into the top 50 retail centres in the UK, offering visitors a wider range of shops with the provision of new retail and leisure facilities. Improved parking, better pedestrian routes and public space will work together to create a harmonious and relaxed environment for shoppers, residents and visitors to the area.
